Creating Photoshop Brushes

Creating Photoshop Brushes

  1. Find an interesting large and good quality image to use for your brush.

A great place To Find Textures go to The Texture King

or create your own.

Examples Below:

  1. Cut copy a piece of the image Change to Grayscale Mode Image > Mode > Grayscale.
  2. Open Brightness/Contrast Images > Brightness/Contrast or Levels Image > Adjustments > Levels
  3. Adjust the contrast as strong as possible Background should be as light as possible the brush or design with a lot of detail.
  4. To soften the edges of the brush, select an area of the image (about a
  5. quarter of the way in from all of the edges), go to Select > Feather,
  6. then Select > Inverse. Fill the selected area with white.
  7. When you are happy with the results go to menu Edit/Define Brush
  8. Name your brush.

Saving the brushes as a set.

You can create your own set of brushes by saving them in the Brush palette located in the Options Toolbar. Click the little arrow button on top right and select Save Brushes from the menu. Make sure that only your brushes are loaded in the palette, otherwise the other default brushes are saved as well in that set.

Create you own collection of brushes by saving your brushes in an .ABR file. This is important since your brush will be saved permanently as a Brush Set (.ABR file), so don't forget this. Otherwise as soon as you reset your Brush palette, your brushes will be gone. You have to delete all other brushes one by one by holding down 2nd mouse button on the brush (or hold down the control key) and select “Delete Brush” from the menu. If you only have the default brushes loaded at that time, you don’t have to worry about deleting them since you can reset the brush palette at any time once you have saved your brushes.
